What is cpe-wg?

The Classic Protocol Extension Working Group (cpe-wg) is an open forum for the maintenance and further development of the Classic Protocol Extension, with the ultimate goal of making CPE easy to implement by the next generation of contributors.

Why create a working group?

In late 2024, wiki.vg shut down, and took the original forum for the protocol specification with it. The content is now available from minecraft.wiki, which integrated many articles from wiki.vg into their mainspace. Unfortunately, the CPE specification itself will never be merged into the main article namespace, as it does not pass their notability requirements:

• "Articles about client or server mods, or third-party programs and map editors, are not allowed to be created on the wiki"
• "Articles regarding custom servers should not be created."

Because the Classic Protocol Extension, and all the clients and servers which implement it are modifications or emulations of Minecraft 0.30c, they are considered mods or third-party programs and not permitted on the wiki, leaving the specification with a precarious future. It exists only at the convenience of the wiki.vg merge project, and could be removed at-will.

This working group exists to give the specification a permanent home, in the stewardship of the community that actually uses it.
